The state of social media will continually change, just like all popular technological advances throughout history. But what has the state of social media to small businesses looked like in the last few years?

Well, the first stat on the infographic below that jumps out at me is that 12% of small businesses think that social media won’t impact their business.

Unless their businesses are based solely outside digital spaces and only serve a handful of returning clients, this is naive. I can’t think of a rock solid example - perhaps something like a local handyman?

But even then, a handyman would be able to network with his wider friends and community through social media to leverage more opportunities. Do you see where I’m going?

The second stat that jumps out is one I get told by business owners all the time - they are overwhelmed by social media, which keeps them from realising it’s full potential.

This is very common. Even for a small business with a limited budget, there is never enough hours in the day to really reap the benefits of social media (here’s a day in the life of a social media manager infographic!). The big brands can throw resources at it to ‘make it work’ for them, but the small businesses have to be more economical and focus on narrowing down their scope to efficiently drive towards their objectives.

This is much easier said than done!
