Hey! How do I get in to a social media job? I am going to start learning about the different social networks but I was wondering what the best way to start getting paid is? Thanks!

That’s a question I’m asked a lot. To do anything professionally, you have to have skills and expertise, so read a lot to get good background knowledge and practice on your own social networks for some initial experience.

It may even be worth doing some volunteer work to get some working experience, perhaps for local companies.

There are loads of online place where you can pick up some freelance work - oDesk, Elance, peopleperhour, freelancer.com etc.

Practice your online marketing skills that you learn and put them to use for your own lead generation campaign. You can read my story here, along with a lot of background information on becoming a great social media manager: http://stuartjdavidson.com/social-media-manager/

Thanks Stuart! I used your article to rewrite my CV and I have signed up to elance now. I am thinking to start my own website but I am not sure where to begin! Any other advice would be very helpful!

    Pleasure Tracy.

I always advise people to think about purpose and plan carefully before jumping in. What do you hope to get out of from launching a website? Is a website the best way to achieve this? Is this viable within your budget? How will you market and manage your site?

If you’re set on launching your own website, then think about your capacity and expenditure. If you’re trying to create a website on a budget, then choose a WordPress theme and hire a freelancer to set it up and customise for you. You will need to buy a domain name and hosting too - try GoDaddy. If you plan to update and manage it yourself, especially if you want to use it to blog, then have your web designer train you on using WordPress.

Let me know if I can help further and keep me posted on how you get on.
